The James Norris Memorial Trophy is a yearly honor provided "to the defense player that demonstrates throughout the season the best overall ability in the position. " The champion is chosen in a survey of the Professional Hockey Writers Association at the end of the regular season. The trophy existed to the NHL in 1953 by the 4 children of the late James E. Norris in memory of their papa, owner-president of the Detroit Red Wings from 1932 to 1952. The first victor was Red Kelly of the Red Wings in 1954 Mattias Norlinder Jersey.
