Big hitters generally flourish in the Indian Premier League (IPL), and few have dominated as explosively as Andre Russell. Still, the Kolkata Knight Riders (KKR) player has struggled to match his customary destructive form in the 2025 campaign.
Before reality sank in once more, a recent game against the Lucknow SuperGiants (LSG) at Eden Gardens offered a fleeting optimism. Interestingly, fans tracking match stats and player performances through platforms like the Billy 777 earning app noticed a spark in Russell’s gameplay, hinting at a possible return to form.
A moment of hope in a thrills high scoring thriller
The sheer number of sixes hardly stood out in a game when nearly 450 runs were scored in less than 40 overs. But the tired Kolkata crowd—who had suffered the sweltering midday heat—roared louder than they had all game when Andre Russell hammered Akash Deep over the ropes.
By then, KKR needed 56 off 26 balls. Russell and Rinku Singh at the crease gave people hope that the chase was still alive as the game remained in balance. But was the outburst of the audience merely because KKR had a fighting chance?
Alternatively, was it because Russell, who had been battling all season, at last, seemed to be finding his rhythm? The response is still unresolved. Russell's first of the season, that six also astonishingly represented his highest IPL 2025 score at that moment.
The flicker fades. Right away
Russell's return to his best only held promise for a few more minutes. Following a full delivery into the stands, he dropped to a low full toss from Shardul Thakur, a bowler who has dismissed him with deliveries like those in past seasons. His removal revealed KKR's lower order, and even with Rinku Singh's heroic 15-ball 38, the team lost by just four runs.
Russell's early departure reflected his challenges this season in miniature. KKR has shown faith in their players—like sticking with Sunil Narine as an opener, which paid off with a quickfire 30—but Russell's form has been an increasing issue.
Russell's special role and KKR's reliance on him
Russell is a confirmed match-winner for KKR, unlike fresh signings like Quinton de Kock and Spencer Johnson. He wanted a better batting position to maximize his influence in 2019 at his best. But he has been KKR's designated finisher throughout the years; he has often honed this ability to save the team from seemingly insurmountable challenges.
Russell is still the go-to man in high-stress hunts, even with Rinku Singh and Ramandeep Singh now sharing the last tasks. Although he is rare in his ability to turn games alone, the enormous risk involved in his position guarantees unreliability.
A Long Slump Over Multiple Formats
Publicly supporting Russell, KKR captain Ajinkya Rahane has discounted worries about his form.
"Not really (concerned about Russell's batting form)," Rahane remarked following the LSG loss. "Russell is, we all know, a dangerous player. Pursuing 230-plus, batsmen have to be aggressive. It clicks occasionally and does not other times. We are not worried since we know he is a quality player."
Russell's long-time friend and mentor, Dwayne Bravo of KKR, also backed him ahead of their game against Sunrisers Hyderabad, stating: "Russell has done too much for KKR to be doubted after just a few failures."
Still, the figures provide an alarming picture. Russell's challenges go beyond simply this IPL season. KKR's performances have dropped across events since his title-winning campaign in 2024:
The Hundred in 2024: 90 runs @ 12.85
Caribbean Premier League 2024: 236 runs at 23.20
ILT20 (2025): 130 runs @ 18.57
IPL 2025: 17 at 4.25
Although his strike rates are still strong, for a player of his level, the absence of significant contributions is alarming.

Russell Turn It Around for KKR?
KKR is in the lower part of the points rankings after one-third of the league stage has gone. They need Russell at his best if they are to launch a meaningful playoff assault. While he has helped with the ball, his main contribution—game-changing cameos with the bat—has been absent.
One-six versus LSG was a momentary reminder of Russell's potential. KKR will be hoping that it is the spark that starts his season once more. Should he recapture his form, the Knight Riders could possibly become the formidable team they were last year.
